Douglas Allen Fenberg  11/20/52 — 5/26/93
Doug was born in the Los Angeles area and grew up in Long Beach. He was a year behind me, class of 1969, although we were the same age. I had been skipped over the second grade, making me a year younger than everyone else in my classes. It was not a Good Thing. I met Doug in my senior year through my best friend Bobby Fischer (class of 1968) as they were both on the water polo team. After graduation, Bobby and I parted ways but Doug and I grew closer. I moved to San Francisco and became a full-on hippie. Doug stayed in the Southland and more or less did the same thing. We saw plenty of each other — went to a lot of Grateful Dead shows together, playing music, body surfing at Crescent Bay, mountain climbing in Desolation Valley, and managing to stay out of trouble until the mid-1980s. Trouble came to us in different forms, but as the Dead song goes, "there's nothing you can hold for very long".

In the summer of 1986, Doug came out of the closet to his friends and family, although he was as hetero as any of us, to judge by the amazing girlfriends he attracted and held. We were always jealous of him. He and I talked about this change, and he was as puzzled by it as I was. It seems people can change their identity on very deep levels, without intention or awareness. Anyway, Doug's second announcement was much grimmer then the first. He was HIV-positive. In 1986, this was a death sentence of short duration. The median time between diagnosis and death was 18 months. Doug quickly found out who his friends were. He was way out on the strong end of the Bell curve of this mysterious and terrifying disease, and he was a battler. He lived 7 more years, most of that time in reasonably good health and able to do the two things he wanted most: to live and die in San Francisco with his lover Brian. He died in May of 1993, 20 years to the day and about a quarter-mile from the site of a legendary Grateful Dead concert which we had both attended.

Alex Robert Henry, Class of 1969

Alex passed away in June, 2009.
If there was such a club as "The Good Guys Of The World",
club, Alex would have been the Grand Poobah! He leaves
behind a charming wife, Lauren, and two lovely
daughters, Jennifer and Jessica.  Alex was active
in his church and worked for CalTrans for
many years.  He was always there when you needed
a friend and his many friends are sad to see him go.
